Is the UN relevant any longer?

Recent news today from the Gaza Strip is interesting for several reasons. First and foremost, the continuing tragedy of how Israel handles a situation that they created in the first place continues.  Gaza was essentially a prison from the beginning (given Israel's control of the borders) and its the frustration of Palestinians with that arrangement, and an overreaction by Israel to the actions of Hamas that has breathed life into the embers of conflict.

Of second importance, and something that needs to continue to be studied, is the increasing irrelevance of the United Nations.  While the United Nations has never been "forceful" it used to have the respect of all parties engaged  effected by international conflict.  The recent rebuff by both Hamas and Israel of a proposed cease fire, without any discussion whatsoever, suggests that respect for the organization is on the decline.

What will the UN look like moving into the future, a future that - due to globalization - promises more complexities and disagreements?

The following is trailer of a film coming out this year that looks at the failure of the UN to resolve problems in the past and questions whether or not they can resolve them going into the future.  It looks fairly interesting...

More information on this film can be found at U.N. Me Movie.
